Joint Mobilization

When a joint loses its normal mobility — whether from injury, surgery, arthritis, or prolonged immobility — pain, stiffness, and functional limitation follow. Exercise alone cannot fully restore what has been lost. Joint mobilization is the hands-on clinical intervention that directly addresses joint restriction at its source, and it is a cornerstone of the manual therapy approach at Fultz Physical Therapy & Joint Rehab across all three of our locations in South Shreveport, North Shreveport, and South Bossier.

What Is Joint Mobilization?

Joint mobilization is the skilled, hands-on application of controlled passive movement to a specific joint — targeting the accessory motions (the small gliding, rolling, and spinning movements within the joint) that are prerequisite to full, pain-free functional range of motion. These accessory motions are not under voluntary muscular control and cannot be restored through exercise alone — they require direct manual intervention by a trained physical therapist.

Joint mobilization is graded based on the amplitude and speed of the movement applied, ranging from gentle oscillatory techniques used to modulate pain and improve tissue extensibility, to higher-grade techniques used to restore end-range mobility in joints with significant restriction. Your physical therapist selects the appropriate grade and technique based on your specific presentation, pain levels, and treatment goals.

How Joint Mobilization Works

The therapeutic effects of joint mobilization are both mechanical and neurophysiological. Mechanically, mobilization restores normal joint arthrokinematics — the precise movement relationships between joint surfaces that allow the joint to move through its full range without pain or impingement. Neurophysiologically, mobilization activates mechanoreceptors within the joint capsule and surrounding tissues, producing immediate inhibition of pain signals and reduction in protective muscle guarding that is limiting movement.

The result is often immediate — patients frequently experience a significant increase in range of motion and reduction in pain within a single treatment session.

Where Joint Mobilization Is Applied

Joint mobilization is applied throughout the spine and extremities, including:

  • Cervical and thoracic spine mobilization for neck pain, headaches, and upper extremity symptoms
  • Lumbar spine mobilization for back pain, stiffness, and radicular symptoms
  • Shoulder joint mobilization for frozen shoulder, post-surgical stiffness, and impingement
  • Hip mobilization for arthritis, post-surgical restriction, and movement dysfunction
  • Knee, ankle, and foot mobilization for post-injury and post-surgical stiffness
  • Wrist, hand, and elbow mobilization for upper extremity injuries and chronic pair conditions
