IASTM

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a highly effective manual therapy technique that extends the physical therapist’s ability to detect and treat soft tissue dysfunction with a level of precision that hands alone cannot always achieve. At Fultz Physical Therapy & Joint Rehab, IASTM is integrated into treatment plans at our South Shreveport, North Shreveport, and South Bossier clinics for patients dealing with chronic soft tissue conditions, scar tissue restrictions, tendinopathies, and movement limitations that have not fully resolved with other approaches.

What Is IASTM?

IASTM uses specially designed stainless steel instruments to scan and treat restrictions within the soft tissues of the body — including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. The instruments are contoured to fit the anatomical shapes of different body regions, allowing the therapist to apply precisely controlled pressure to specific areas of dysfunction. As the instrument glides over the tissue, subtle changes in texture — adhesions, scar tissue, fascial restrictions — are detected through the instrument and treated with targeted, controlled strokes.

The mechanical stimulation produced by IASTM triggers a local inflammatory response in the treated tissue — not a harmful inflammatory response, but a controlled, healing one. This response recruits fibroblasts to the area, initiating the remodeling of dysfunctional scar tissue and collagen into healthy, organized tissue capable of normal function and load tolerance.

What IASTM Treats

IASTM is particularly effective for:

  • Chronic tendinopathies including Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), and rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Post-surgical scar tissue management following ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, joint replacement, and spinal surgery
  • Plantar fasciitis and chronic fascial restrictions of the foot and ankle
  • IT band syndrome and chronic hip and knee soft tissue dysfunction
  • Cervical and lumbar soft tissue restrictions contributing to chronic neck and back pain
  • Any area of the body where scar tissue or fascial adhesion is limiting normal movement and function

What to Expect

IASTM treatment involves the application of the instrument to the skin with a small amount of treatment lotion to allow the tool to glide smoothly. The therapist uses a combination of scanning strokes to identify restrictions and treatment strokes to address them. Some patients experience mild redness or temporary soreness in the treated area following treatment — a normal response reflecting the therapeutic inflammatory process being initiated. Most patients notice measurable improvements in tissue mobility and pain within a small number of treatment sessions.

IASTM is always combined with active movement and therapeutic exercise immediately following treatment to translate the tissue changes produced by the technique into improved functional movement patterns.
